New Zealand made history by winning their first Test series in India after securing a 113-run victory in the second match on Saturday. The visitors bowled out India for 245 runs while they were chasing a target of 359 on the third day. This victory gave New Zealand an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
This marks India’s first Test series defeat at home since December 2012, when England led by Alastair Cook, defeated them 2-1.
New Zealand had never won a Test series on Indian soil since their first tour in 1955.
In the process, Rohit Sharma became the fourth Indian captain to have won an ICC trophy and concede a Test series at home as well. Previously, Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni had been part of this bizarre trend.
Kapil Dev, who had steered India to their first-ever ICC title by winning the 1983 World Cup, then saw West Indies triumph 3-0 in the very same year. He was also the captain in 1987 when Pakistan won 1-0.
Later, Ganguly, who was captain when India shared honours with Sri Lanka for the 2002 Champions Trophy, witnessed the Test side lose the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 1-2 in 2004.
MS Dhoni, who captained India to 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup successes, was in the leadership role when India last lost a Test series at home – against England in 2012.
And now, Rohit Sharma joins this list having led the side to T20 World Cup success earlier in the year.
