Australian fast bowler Jhye Richardson is set for an extended period on the sidelines as he prepares to undergo shoulder surgery this week, following a dislocation suffered in a freak incident during a Sheffield Shield match last November.
The injury, which occurred while Richardson was celebrating a wicket with a high-five, has ruled the 28-year-old out of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) season, where he represents the Perth Scorchers.

Richardson’s career has been marked by frequent injuries, including recurring hamstring issues, which have limited him to just 36 matches across formats for Australia since his debut in 2017. He has claimed 57 wickets during this time.
In a press release, Richardson explained his decision to opt for surgery. “After careful consideration and many discussions with my medical team, I’ve made the decision to undergo shoulder surgery to improve stability and reduce the risk of future injury,” he said.

“For the past few years, I have been limited by my shoulder in the field and know how increasingly important it is to be capable to back up my teammates. While it’s a tough call, especially as it means I won’t be able to finish the season with the Scorchers, this is the best option to set me up for a strong and healthy return to cricket.”
Richardson emphasised the importance of timing the surgery to prepare for his long-term goals. “The timing of the surgery is crucial to ensure I have the best possible build-up, including Shield cricket leading into next summer. I’ll be giving everything I’ve got to the rehab process, determined to come back as the best version of myself.”
The fast bowler expressed gratitude for the support he has received and optimism about the future. “Thanks for all the support, and I can’t wait to be back stronger for summer 2025/2026!”
Richardson has set his sights on making a full recovery in time for next year’s Ashes series during the Australian summer, where he hopes to bolster Australia’s pace attack.
