According to reports, the Murrayfield DAFS Cricket Club has claimed that their players were subjected to verbal abuse and physical assaults by football fans who were walking to a nearby friendly match between Rangers and Manchester United.
Despite the presence of police officers nearby, the club claimed there was a lack of intervention.
An investigation into the allegations is currently being conducted by the police, who have stated they are looking into the abuse reports but have not received complaints regarding their response to the incidents.
The match, part of the East of Scotland Cricket Association division seven, was abandoned due to the incident. Murrayfield DAFS expressed disappointment over the events.
“Very upset that our 4th team had to abandon their game today due a combination of sexist, homophobic and racist abuse at Roseburn Park outside Murrayfield Stadium today against Stewart’s Melville Cricket Club,” the statement, posted on X (formerly Twitter), reads.
“Not only that, there were two instances of physical assault that were perpetrated on players. The perpetrators of said abuse were fans of football clubs playing a friendly at Murrayfield Stadium – and police were standing 50 yards away,” it added.
The club is preparing to lodge a formal complaint with Police Scotland and other relevant bodies. Murrayfield DAFS have also issued an apology to Stewart’s Melville Cricket Club, the opposing team in the abandoned match.
A report from BBC said that Police Scotland has confirmed that inquiries are underway following the reported abuse during the match on Saturday, 20 July 2024.
