NEW DELHI: Delhi Capitals are not considering Sourav Ganguly for the head coach position following their decision to part ways with Ricky Ponting. Despite Ganguly’s interest, DC management is hesitant to assign him dual responsibilities as both the Director of Cricket and head coach, according to a report by News18.
Instead, they are looking into candidates like Gautam Gambhir, known for his effective mentorship and coaching.
Ganguly, the former BCCI president, currently serves as DC’s Director of Cricket. He is responsible for overseeing the franchise’s sister teams: the Dubai Capitals in ILT20 and the Pretoria Capitals in the SA T20 league.A source cited in the report mentioned, “Ganguly already has a lot of things on his plate – planning multiple things for the franchise as the Director of Cricket.”
The management believes the team needs a very hands-on coach who actively follows the cricket circuit, similar to Gambhir.
“The team needs a very hands-on coach who follows the circuit very aggressively. Like Gautam Gambhir does. It’s no surprise that he has been so successful as a mentor. He keeps track of players – both international and domestic,” the source added.
Deliberations over appointing a new head coach stem from a desire for stability, particularly before the mega auctions.
“The management doesn’t want a stop-gap arrangement for the head coach position as it’s the season right after the mega auction as the new cycle gets underway,” the source explained.
Additionally, the report indicates that DC are in contact with two former World Cup-winning cricketers regarding the head coach role. 0
DC are yet to win an IPL title despite being one of the original eight teams of the league, prompting these structural changes as they strive for their first championship.
